Client Story

From a broken shoulder to 100 rounds of golf: Valerie's story.

"My shoulders are not hurting any longer."

Valerie came to Heidi after a skiing accident left her with a broken shoulder. She had completed her physiotherapy. The acute injury had healed. But her body had not come back to where it was.

Her right shoulder was sitting lower than her left, pulled down by muscles that had wasted away during the period of injury and protection. Her upper body had adapted around the limitation, leaning to the right, guarding the shoulder without her even realizing it.

She came in with one clear goal: to get her shoulder moving properly again.

The work focused on upper body strengthening and full-body mobility. Targeted, progressive, and adapted to what Valerie's shoulder could actually do in each session rather than what the program expected it to do.

Within a few weeks, she wrote to say her shoulder was starting to feel different. The frozen, pulled sensation was beginning to ease. She could reach things overhead with less of that familiar resistance.

A little later: "My shoulders are not hurting any longer."

And then: "I am feeling stronger. There is no more pain in my shoulders like I had a couple weeks back."

Within eight weeks, her right shoulder had settled back into a more natural, even position. Her posture had realigned. She was no longer protecting a shoulder that no longer needed protection.

She kept training. She kept building. The following season, she returned to golf and completed over 100 rounds.

This happened not because she pushed through, but because she started by building a healthy foundation, which gave her the ability to do it.

Eight weeks of targeted virtual upper body strength training helped Valerie restore her shoulder to its natural position and resolve the postural compensation patterns that physiotherapy alone had not corrected. The following season she completed over 100 rounds of golf.

Valerie's then and now transformation showing her posture change after shoulder recovery training
Then

Right shoulder dropped and visibly uneven after a skiing injury. Upper torso leaning to the right. Muscles significantly atrophied. Physiotherapy complete but movement still limited and protective.

Now

Shoulder restored to a more natural, even position. Posture realigned. Protective movement patterns resolved. Over 100 rounds of golf the following season.

A shoulder that had healed, but a body that was still learning to move and improve. That is the gap Heidi fills.

She built the strength before she needed it: Sandra's story.

"The exercises I did prior to my surgery helped with the exercises post-surgery."

For more than a year, Sandra had been living with excruciating knee pain. Surgery was scheduled. There was no avoiding it.

What Sandra decided to do in the time before that surgery is what makes her story worth reading.

She came to Heidi not to feel better before the surgery, though that happened. She came to prepare her body so thoroughly for the recovery that when the hard part arrived, she would already have what she needed.

The work before surgery had three clear areas of focus.

First, knee strengthening. Building as much strength and stability in the knee as possible before surgery would reduce muscle atrophy during recovery and support faster healing.

Second, core strength. Getting in and out of bed, sitting up, and navigating a body that was going to be significantly limited in the weeks after surgery all require a core that can carry the load.

Third, upper body strength. After a knee replacement, the upper body does a great deal of work that the lower body usually handles. Getting up from a chair, using support rails, transferring weight. Building that strength before surgery meant Sandra arrived at her recovery already equipped.

Within six weeks, the results were measurable. Her upper body strength had increased significantly.

"The exercises I did prior to my surgery helped with the exercises post-surgery. I was able to balance and walk and maneuver myself better just because of the increased strength in my arms and legs. Less headaches, which is a big one, and just feeling all around better and sleeping better." — Sandra

Her recovery was faster than her surgical team anticipated. The strength she had built before the surgery changed what was possible after it.

She had not waited to start recovering. She had started before the surgery began.

Six weeks of targeted pre-surgical strength training helped Sandra build the upper body, core, and knee strength needed for her knee replacement recovery to exceed her surgical team's expectations. Pre-surgical strength training reduces healing time and supports better mobility after surgery by strengthening the areas that carry additional load during recovery.

Hear Sandra describe her experience preparing for and recovering from knee replacement surgery.

Then

Over a year of excruciating knee pain. Knee replacement surgery scheduled. Strength, balance, and mobility in significant decline. Facing a recovery that typically takes months.

Now

Six weeks of pre-surgical strength training completed. Post-surgical balance, walking mechanics, and recovery speed exceeded her surgical team's expectations.

If you are facing a surgery and wondering whether it is worth doing anything before the date arrives, Sandra's answer is clear.

At 84 and 88, they walked Disney with their grandkids until 11:30 at night: Mary and Clayt's story.

"We truly believe that Heidi's workouts have been our hope of being able to stay healthy and independent."

Mary is a cancer survivor. She has also been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Her husband Clayt has arthritis. They came to Heidi knowing, with the clarity that comes from having navigated real health challenges, that staying active was not optional. It was necessary.

They began training together over Zoom. Like many clients who had not used virtual coaching before, they were not entirely sure what to expect. What they found was something that worked better than they had anticipated.

"Stairs are much easier to do. Our balance has improved. Our ability to get down on the floor and up again, to get something out of a bottom cupboard, is done with ease. Our daughter-in-law was bragging to her mom: 'Oh yes, Mary and Clayt can get up off the floor with no help!'" — Mary

The functional changes were real and they were visible to the people around them.

But one outcome stood apart from the rest.

Mary had experienced a heart attack. Her cardiologist, reviewing her progress, had something to say about how she was doing.

"A very positive moment for me was when my cardiologist said my heart had totally healed after my heart attack, likely related to my fitness and healthy lifestyle." — Mary

Her heart had healed. Fully. And the person responsible for her care attributed that recovery, at least in part, to the consistency with which she had kept moving.

Mary and Clayt have been training with Heidi for years. They have continued building, continued showing up, and continued proving to themselves and everyone around them what staying active at this stage of life actually makes possible.

At 84 and 88, they joined their grandchildren at Disney. They walked all day. They kept up with everyone. They were still going at 11:30 that night.

"We were so proud of ourselves. We truly believe that Heidi's workouts have been our hope of being able to stay healthy and independent." — Mary

Mary, a cancer survivor with osteoporosis, and her husband Clayt, who has arthritis, built measurable functional strength, balance, and independence through consistent virtual coaching with Heidi Lootsma. Mary's cardiologist confirmed her heart had fully healed after a heart attack, attributing the recovery to her fitness and lifestyle. At 84 and 88, they walked all day at Disney with their grandchildren.

Hear Mary describe what staying strong and independent has meant for her and Clayt.

Then

Cancer survivor with osteoporosis. Husband with arthritis. Stairs, balance, and the physical demands of daily life all areas of real concern.

Now

Stairs easy. Getting up from the floor independently. Cardiologist confirmed Mary's heart had fully healed after a heart attack, attributing the recovery to her fitness and lifestyle. All-day Disney with grandkids at 11:30 at night.

Mary and Clayt are not exceptions. They are examples of what consistent, adapted movement makes possible when the program is built for the body you actually have.

Five months, a desk job, and the body she had stopped recognizing: Debbie's story.

"It's not easy but it's also not so hard that you want to quit."

When Debbie first came to Heidi, she had just taken a leave from a demanding and stressful desk job. Long hours of sitting had taken a visible toll. Her shoulders had rounded forward. Her posture had compressed. The physical expression of years at a desk had become something she could see and feel every day.

She was clear about what she wanted. Not a number on a scale. Not a dramatic physical overhaul. She wanted to create a sustainable routine that would help her move more, feel more energetic, and feel better in her own body.

Over five months, her body changed in ways that went well beyond what she had expected.

The rounded shoulders began to straighten. The muscles in her back and shoulders strengthened and pulled her posture back into alignment. Her core became firmer, giving her a stable foundation she had not felt in years. She stood taller. She moved differently.

But the changes were not only physical.

When your posture improves, your breathing changes. When your breathing changes, your energy changes. When your energy changes, everything else follows.

Debbie described the process honestly, which is what makes her reflection genuinely useful for someone considering whether to begin:

"It's not easy but it's also not so hard that you want to quit." — Debbie

The routine she built with Heidi did not feel like something grafted onto her life. It became part of it. And because it fits, it lasted.

After five months of virtual strength training with Heidi Lootsma, Debbie reversed the postural effects of years of desk work, including rounded shoulders, reduced core stability, and compressed posture, while building the sustainable movement routine she had been looking for.

Debbie's then and now transformation: Day 1, Day 28, and Day 154, showing her posture change after five months of strength training
Then

Just taken leave from a demanding desk job. Years of long hours had left her with rounded shoulders, compromised posture, low energy, and a body she did not feel at home in. Not focused on numbers. Wanted to feel better.

Now

Posture visibly transformed. Shoulders back. Core stronger. Easier to breathe. More energy. Standing taller with greater stability. A sustainable routine that fits her life.

Debbie did not come in chasing a transformation. She came in wanting to feel like herself. Those are often the same thing.
